Frequently Asked Questions

What is tempered glass?

Tempered glass is glass that has been treated to make it up to 5X stronger than conventional glass. The treatment involves rapidly heating the glass followed by immediately cooling it. Quickly cooling the incredibly hot glass causes the outside of the glass to harden quicker than the center. This process leaves the center in tension making the glass significantly stronger and more durable than ordinary glass and changes the way it breaks.

What does tempered glass do?

When tempered glass suffers an impact it can break into a web-like interlocking pattern and remain within its window frame. This is not always the case as the broken pieces only hold onto adjoining pieces and can fall out of their frame.

What makes tempered glass a safety glass?

Tempered glass is significantly more durable than ordinary glass and it is designed to break into less harmful pebble-like pieces instead of sharp and jagged shards.

When is tempered glass necessary?

Tempered glass is required if:

  • Any glass that is whithin 24 inches of a doorway.
  • Any fixed or movable window that is bigger than 9 square feet and the bottom edge of the glass is less than 18 inches above the floor with the top edge over 36 inches above the floor.
  • Any glass that is over 30 sqft. in size.
  • All glass located in a bathroom or any wet area such as showers, bathtubs, near hot tubs, steam rooms, whirlpools, saunas, spa decks, and swimming pools.
  • Any glass that is less than 60 inches above a walkway and also within 60 inches from the edge of water.
  • Any glass used in a doors.
  • Any glass adjacent to stairs, landings, and ramps if the glass is within 5 feet from the top or bottom from the stairs.

Should I remove my blinds before install?

We appreciate if any furniture is moved away from windows and the blinds are removed before we start the install process. This helps our preparation and install process run as smooth and efficient as possible for the install process. If your blinds are not removed or you need us to help you remove them we dont mind removing the blinds before we start the install process or as we are removing your old windows. However we will not be responsible for blinds that were previously broken or break during the install process from old age or faulty parts.

What happens to my wired alarm sensors on my old windows?

Your wired alarm sensors are typically drilled into or glued to the old window frames. When the old windows are removed these sensors typically are removed and discarded with the old window frames. Our install team will pull the old wires to the maximum available length and leave them visible and accessable for your alarm company to find and reuse them. You will need to contact your alarm company or an alarm professional and request new alarm sensors be installed on your new windows. We do not reconnect your old sensors or install new sensors to the windows for your alarm system.

Will I need to repaint after my window project is complete?

This answer can vary from home to home and be dependent on a few factors. One factor is the age and thickness of the current paint. Older paint can flake away with any minor contact. Just cutting the old caulking out around the window being replaced can cause older paint to chip.
Your project may also need a little paint if the area surrounding the window being replaced has wood trim around the outside. Wood trim around a window will need to be removed before the old window comes out. The trim will also need to be reused or replaced. This depends on the quality of the original trim after it is removed. When the current trim is replaced we will recaulk it with white caulking that you might want to repaint over. If new trim is installed it will need to be painted by you or your selected professional. Most inside areas where the paint might be effected will be near the areas that will be recaulked after the new window is installed. Small blimishes to the paint near the window frames will be covered by the new caulking being applied around the windows.

Replacement Vinyl Window Installs

In our Texas climate, older window products become run down due to years of rain, hail, and seasonal temperature change. These worn out builder grade windows often become difficult to operate due to years of expansion and contraction. The old seals eventually fail, sashes loosen or tighten, and gaps form, leading to major drafts, ineffective window operation, and higher heating and cooling costs for homeowners.

Additional Install Notes:

Window Security Alarm

If your windows have wired security alarm sensors you will need to contact your security alarm provider to replace the sensors. Our Installers will pull the security alarm wire and sensor off the old window and have it ready to install on the new windows. We do not install or reinstall any security alarm sensors.

When removing the old windows and replacing them with new vinyl windows there is a chance for old paint to flake or chip off. It may be recommended to touch up paint around new windows after they are installed.

When replacing old windows in existing homes we run into rotten or damaged wood around the opening. In some cases we can replace this wood for an additional cost but some issues may call for a siding repair company.
